Journey of Baldness, Stage One:
Shock
No surprise here. Whether or not we expect baldness in our lives,
the first moment of dead certainty is a real blow.
Picture a young man, just days before his twentieth birthday.
He’s tooling around in Dad’s car. He’s got the
sun-roof open, and life is good. But wait. As he catches
his reflection in the rear-view mirror, with the sunlight streaming
in from above, his world shatters around him, leaving a sickening
and undeniable fact: male pattern baldness has begun its evil
work.
The day, obviously, is ruined; so is, he fears, the rest of
his life. In the coming months and years, he will cycle through
a range of emotions and psychological states – some pleasant,
some horrific.
