Heroes of Baldness, Number One: Gandhi

Mohandas K. Gandhi was born on October 2, 1869 in Porbandar, India to Karamchand and Putlibai Gandhi. He was the youngest of three sons.

His fight for Indian rights against the oppression of the British began in South Africa, where he lived for nearly 20 years. On returning to his homeland, he continued his peaceful but determined struggle against British rule.

Gandhi’s guiding principle was Satyagraha, which can be translated as Truth-force. At the core of his work was ahimsa, or non-violence. His goal for the people of India was swaraj, or "self-rule." This twofold concept applied to both the individual Indian as well as India as a nation. To this end, Gandhi encouraged Indians to hand-spin yarn and to hand-weave cloth, believing these to be crucial steps to swadeshi, or self-sufficiency, for India.

On January 30, 1948, while on his way to a prayer meeting, at which more then 500 people awaited him, Gandhi was assassinated by Nathrum Godse.

To this day, Gandhi is known as Mahatama, or Great Soul, and is regarded as the Father of the Nation of India.
